What is radiofrequency during the post-op recovery used for?

After a plastic surgery, post-op care becomes essential to achieve desired results and to have a quick recovery. For this reason, the use of post-surgical compression garments, the following of diets, and the application of lymphatic drainages are frequent in this phase of the process. In addition, the use of radiofrequency during the post-op recovery is also common to achieve these objectives.

This type of non-invasive treatment is just as effective as other similar techniques for the recovery of the body after plastic surgery. With this in mind, we have decided to compile the most important information about it so that you know its main benefits and what you can actually expect from this procedure.

What does radiofrequency during the post-op recovery consist of?

Radiofrequency is a treatment that allows skin retraction and stimulates collagen production after plastic surgery in order to prevent or reverse tissue flaccidity. For this, it uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves [3] on the skin that cause controlled heating of the deeper layers of the skin, and thus, heat the existing collagen fibers to contract, tighten and revitalize [7].

This is a painless procedure that promotes new collagen formation, lymphatic drainage, and blood circulation for smoother skin and improved tissue healing.

Its application by health professionals is simple. A specific gel is applied to the area to be treated, and then, the radiofrequency equipment is slid over the area with circular movements to heat the elastic collagen fibers.

Normally, patients who have undergone abdominoplasty, laser liposuction, breast surgeries and/or eyelid surgery are the ones who most often resort to this type of treatment during their recovery.

What are the advantages of radiofrequency during the post-op recovery?

Radiofrequency is a safe procedure [1] that provides the following benefits to patients [4]:

In addition, it can be used both on the face and body for flaccidity, rejuvenation and remodeling issues, it has no contraindications to be combined with other non-invasive techniques and the sessions are usually relaxing for many patients.

How many radiofrequency sessions are needed during the post-op recovery?

This will depend on the medical evaluation for each patient and the area to be treated. For example, facial sessions could be needed one or two times per week during the time that  physician considers [8], and for body sessions, it could range from two to three sessions per week [6]. However, these averages could be more or less according to the case.

In addition, it is possible that pre-surgery sessions may be considered to prepare the tissues for better results. But this is only possible to determine through a medical consultation.

In summary

Radiofrequency is a painless, outpatient and safe treatment that helps patients have a better post-op recovery, especially if they are coming from body reshaping surgeries, breast surgeries or facial surgeries.

This non-invasive technique uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to reach the deeper layers of the skin and contract the existing collagen to increase its production. As a result, it combats sagging, increases skin firmness, improves the appearance of scars, decreases inflammation and increases blood circulation.
