The Dos and Dont’s after breast augmentation

Many women claim to be satisfied with the results obtained from a mammoplasty. However, it is not enough to be performed in the operating room to obtain the desired result. You will also need to pursue some postoperative care to achieve that goal.

Each body heals at a different pace. As a result, it is very important to follow medical recommendations in this stage  to achieve a quick and smooth recovery.

That’s why we relied on the medical opinion of several surgeons to tell you some of the DOs and DON’Ts while recovering from breast augmentation surgery.

In addition, here are some of the benefits that postoperative care promises to bring to your body and you must keep in mind during the recovery process.

Did you know that breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries in Colombia? Check this post to find out more

BENEFITS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION POST-OP CARE

In a mammoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision at the lower edge of the areola or lower breast crease to insert the breast implant and then sutures it back in place.

The scar that remains is cared for during the recovery process so that it becomes imperceptible. For this reason, post-surgical medical recommendations take on great relevance and allow to achieve that good healing. In addition, they help to reduce swelling, recover mobility and achieve a desired appearance.

The best thing  for you to do is to ask for special instructions from your surgeon. However, there are some general guidelines that will help you to be prepared and to face the recovery process of a mammoplasty.

IMPORTANT DOs AND DON’Ts AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

Eight things you should do during mammoplasty recovery

  1. Try to take short walks as soon as you feel able to. This simple activity stimulates blood flow, which contributes to a smooth recovery [1].
  1. Do postoperative massages in the operated area to help with the healing process. This will activate the production of collagen fibers and accelerate the recovery [1].
  2. Apply the topical cream or ointment recommended by the surgeon.
  1. Use a post-surgical bra without underwire. We recommend that you consider the fabric, design, size, strap fit, and level of compression when you buy one. Your doctor will be able to recommend some brands and tell you when you can stop wearing them.
  1. Put ice or a cold pack over your breast for 10 to 20 minutes during the first 3 days, if you can do it every 1 or 2 hours the inflammation will be reduced. [4]
  1. Protect your scars from the sun with high SPF sunblock. This recommendation is for at least the first year of post-surgery. Although it’s not immediate, the scar will eventually disappear, so be patient and follow medical recommendations.
  1. Be sure to maintain a healthy diet. Include lots of fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of water. This all helps to improve the recovery process [1].
  2. Rest when you feel tired. Getting enough sleep will help you recover.

Six things you should NOT do after undergoing a mammoplasty

  1. Avoid lifting for about 2 to 3 weeks. Anything that will make you constrain is something you shouldn’t lift. Especially, don’t lift anything over your head for approx. the next 15 to 20 days. [4]
  1. Do not drive until your doctor says otherwise. Also, you couldn’t do it  if you are taking pain medication [1].
  1. Do not plunge into bathtubs and hot tubs, non pool or beach until cleared by your doctor [4].
  1. Do not take any medication that hasn’t been prescribed by the surgeon. Also, it’s probably that you must stop taking some medicine even before the procedure [5].
  1. Don’t drink any alcoholic beverage for the following 48 hours after surgery, or until the surgeon authorizes it.
  1. Avoid sleeping in lateral positions.

After reading these general guidelines, we suggest you combine them with your doctor’s instructions because it will be worth them. Just imagine wearing that low-cut clothing with firmer and more proportionate breasts.
